India May Soon Offer Multiple Ethanol Petrol Options At Fuel Pumps

Vehicle owners in India may soon be able to choose ethanol-blended petrol variants such as E20, E22, E25 and E30 based on their car’s engine compatibility and budget.

Petrol pumps across India may soon function more like supermarkets when it comes to fuel choices. Consumers could soon get the option to select from multiple ethanol-blended petrol variants, including E20, E22, E25 and E30, depending on their vehicle’s engine compatibility.

According to reports, the Centre is preparing to expand ethanol fuel options as part of its larger push to reduce crude oil imports and strengthen India’s energy security amid global oil market uncertainties.

At present, E20 petrol is available at fuel stations across the country. However, oil companies and ethanol industry bodies are now pushing for higher ethanol blends to make better use of surplus ethanol production and reduce dependence on imported crude oil.

The proposed move will allow consumers to choose fuel according to their vehicle requirements and budget, similar to selecting products based on personal needs in a supermarket. Different fuel blends are also expected to be priced differently.

Government-owned companies including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum, along with private players such as Jio-BP Mobility, Nayara Energy and Shell, have reportedly been asked to begin preparations for supplying multiple ethanol-blended fuels.

The rollout will require major upgrades at petrol pumps. Retail outlets may need separate dispensing systems, underground storage tanks, blending control systems and fuel quality monitoring mechanisms to handle different fuel variants safely and efficiently.

Officials also plan to introduce clear labelling systems at fuel stations so customers can easily identify the ethanol percentage in each fuel type and choose the correct option for their vehicle.

India currently has nearly 1 lakh fuel stations, of which around 90,600 are operated by state-run oil marketing companies. Industry experts believe the wider availability of ethanol-blended fuels could significantly reduce India’s oil import bill over the coming years.

According to government estimates, India has already saved nearly Rs 1.7 lakh crore through ethanol blending between November 2014 and February 2026. Officials also claim that ethanol use helped reduce around 87 million tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to planting nearly 35 crore trees.

Industry representatives pointed to countries such as Brazil, where consumers already choose different ethanol fuel blends depending on their vehicle needs. They believe India could gradually adopt a similar model based on regional demand, infrastructure readiness and vehicle compatibility.

The move also comes at a time when concerns over global crude oil supply disruptions and rising energy prices remain high due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
