Fuel Worries Drive EV Boom: Pune Sees Threefold Rise in Electric Vehicle Registrations
Fuel Worries Drive EV Boom: Pune Sees Threefold Rise in Electric Vehicle Registrations
Rising fuel prices, better charging infrastructure and growing consumer confidence are accelerating Pune’s shift towards electric mobility, with two-wheelers leading the transition.
Pune: Pune is rapidly emerging as one of Maharashtra’s leading electric vehicle (EV) markets, with registrations witnessing remarkable growth over the past year. Data from Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO), the Vahan database and industry reports show that residents are increasingly choosing electric mobility over conventional petrol and diesel vehicles, driven by rising fuel costs, government incentives and improved charging infrastructure.

The trend has gained further momentum amid concerns over global fuel supply disruptions due to tensions in West Asia, making electric vehicles an attractive long-term alternative.
Pune records threefold increase in EV registrations
According to Pune RTO data, 37,808 electric vehicles were registered between April 1, 2025 and March 31, 2026, compared to 12,737 registrations in the previous financial year, representing nearly a threefold increase.
The biggest contributor to this growth is the electric two-wheeler segment.
Electric two-wheelers dominate the market
Between January and May 2026, Pune registered 13,124 electric two-wheelers, compared to 10,853 during the same period in 2025, reflecting a 24 per cent year-on-year increase.
Monthly registrations crossed the 3,000-unit mark from March onwards, a level that automobile dealers say is generally seen only during festive seasons.
Pimpri-Chinchwad has also witnessed strong demand, recording 5,764 electric two-wheeler registrations between January and May 2026, up from 5,166 units during the corresponding period last year.
Dealers attribute the growth to rising petrol prices, lower running costs and increasing consumer confidence in electric mobility.
Two-wheelers and four-wheelers lead growth
Pune RTO statistics show that:
- Electric two-wheelers increased from 10,765 in 2024-25 to 29,388 in 2025-26, nearly a threefold jump.
- Electric four-wheelers increased from just 1,061 registrations to 7,411 registrations, recording more than a sevenfold rise within a year.
- Three-wheeler EV registrations, however, declined from 450 to 250 units during the same period.
The overall vehicle market has also expanded. Pune Regional Transport Division registered 3,45,455 vehicles in 2025-26, compared to 3,04,610 vehicles in 2024-25. Out of these, 2,23,140 were two-wheelers, while 77,452 were cars and other four-wheelers, indicating that personal mobility continues to dominate purchasing decisions.
Maharashtra continues to lead EV adoption
The state’s EV ecosystem has expanded rapidly over the last few years.
According to government data, Maharashtra now has more than nine lakh registered electric vehicles, the highest among Indian states. Better charging infrastructure, purchase incentives and growing environmental awareness have contributed significantly to this growth.
The state government aims to achieve 30 per cent EV penetration by 2030, while the share of EVs in total vehicle sales has already increased to 16-17 per cent in 2026 from around 7-8 per cent in 2024, according to industry estimates.
Maharashtra tops electric car sales
Industry data also places Maharashtra at the top of India’s electric car market.
During FY 2025-26:
- Maharashtra sold 34,066 electric cars, accounting for 15.5 per cent of all electric cars sold in India.
- Karnataka followed with 24,201 units and an 11 per cent market share.
- Kerala recorded 20,226 units with a 9.2 per cent share.
Among manufacturers, Tata Motors remained the market leader with 85,367 electric cars sold and a 38.9 per cent market share, followed by JSW MG Motors with 58,661 units (26.7 per cent) and Mahindra Electric with 47,316 units (21.6 per cent).
Charging infrastructure expands across Pune
Transport officials say expanding charging infrastructure has played a crucial role in boosting adoption.
New public charging stations are being added across Pune, while residential societies, offices and commercial establishments are increasingly installing private charging points. The availability of home charging facilities has reduced range anxiety and improved consumer confidence.
Officials expect EV demand to continue growing as infrastructure keeps pace with rising vehicle numbers.
Fuel costs influence buying decisions
Automobile dealers say many buyers who were earlier hesitant about electric vehicles are now actively considering them due to increasing fuel expenses.
Electric two-wheelers, in particular, offer significantly lower running and maintenance costs compared to petrol-powered scooters and motorcycles. Improved battery technology, longer warranties and better financing options have further strengthened consumer confidence.
Pune driving Maharashtra’s green mobility transition
With threefold growth in annual registrations, a sharp rise in two-wheeler adoption and rapidly expanding charging infrastructure, Pune is becoming one of India’s fastest-growing electric mobility hubs.
If current trends continue, the city is expected to play a major role in helping Maharashtra achieve its ambitious clean transportation goals while reducing dependence on conventional fuels and promoting sustainable urban mobility.
