A dispute over whether to keep the train door open or closed during heavy rain allegedly ended in tragedy when a 22-year-old passenger was stabbed inside a moving Mumbai local train. The accused has been arrested after a massive police search.

A late-night argument over closing a train door during heavy rain allegedly turned deadly after a 22-year-old commuter was stabbed to death inside a moving Mumbai local train. The accused, identified as 30-year-old Roshan Suvarna, has been arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP) after an extensive manhunt involving six police teams.

The incident took place on Monday night aboard the Churchgate-Nallasopara Fast Local (Train No. 90663). According to police, both the victim, Mayank Ramesh Lohar (22), and the accused boarded the first-class coach of the train at Andheri station.

As heavy rain lashed Mumbai, an argument broke out between the two passengers over whether the coach door should remain open or be shut. Investigators said the verbal dispute escalated while the train was travelling between Andheri and Borivali stations.

During the altercation, Roshan allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Mayank in the abdomen inside the moving train. The sudden attack left fellow passengers in shock as the injured commuter collapsed inside the coach.

According to railway officials, the accused jumped off the train at Platform No. 6 of Borivali station before it came to a complete halt and managed to escape.

The train arrived at Borivali station at 11.04 pm. Within minutes, personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police and medical teams rushed to the coach. At 11.07 pm, rescue teams reached the compartment with a stretcher and support staff. By 11.12 pm, Mayank was taken out of the train and shifted for emergency medical treatment.

Doctors at the Emergency Medical Room examined him at 11.22 pm and declared him dead. At 11.42 pm, his body was shifted by ambulance to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali for post-mortem and other legal procedures.

Following the murder, Borivali GRP launched a large-scale operation to identify and trace the suspect. Six police teams were formed and investigators examined CCTV footage from railway stations and gathered witness accounts and other evidence. Senior Western Railway officials also reached Borivali station and reviewed the sequence of events and the emergency response.

Police said Roshan’s location was eventually traced after sustained questioning of his father. He was subsequently arrested from Kurla and is currently being questioned.

Investigators revealed that the accused worked in the cargo section at Mumbai Airport. Police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal attack.

The incident has once again raised concerns over passenger safety on Mumbai’s suburban railway network, where millions commute every day and minor disputes can sometimes spiral into deadly violence.
