Maharashtra Assembly Calls For SIT Probe Into Ketan Agarwal Murder Case; Fast-Track Trial Demanded
Mumbai/Pune, June 25, 2026: The Maharashtra Assembly on Thursday witnessed a discussion on the murder of Pune-based realtor Ketan Agarwal, with legislators demanding a deeper investigation and swift justice for the victim’s family. During the proceedings, presiding officer Raju Khare directed the state government to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case.
The case came to light after Pune Rural Police revealed that 26-year-old Ketan Agarwal was allegedly murdered at Lohagad Fort on June 18. According to investigators, his fiancée, Siya Goyal (20), and her alleged lover, Chetan Chaudhary (22), are accused of pushing him into a gorge. Both suspects have been arrested.
Raising the issue in the Assembly, NCP MLA Sunil Shelke demanded a comprehensive investigation and urged the government to consider making members of Goyal’s family accused in the case. He alleged that the family had concealed her relationship with another man from Agarwal’s family prior to the engagement. Shelke also called for the matter to be heard in a fast-track court.
The legislator noted that Agarwal and Goyal were scheduled to marry in November at a palace in Udaipur, Rajasthan. He said Agarwal’s family was initially informed that the death was the result of an accident, but a detailed police investigation later uncovered evidence suggesting it was a planned murder.
Shelke praised the Pune Rural Police and the investigating team for their efforts in collecting evidence, recording witness statements, and uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident. He further referred to alleged phone records and other evidence linking the two accused, and urged authorities to examine every aspect of the case thoroughly.
“If justice is to be delivered to Ketan Agarwal and his family, the government must take serious cognisance of the matter and ensure appropriate action,” Shelke said.
The issue also sparked a procedural debate in the Assembly. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Bhaskar Jadhav questioned whether the presiding officer’s direction to form an SIT would be binding on the government, citing past instances where legislative rulings were not implemented. BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar responded by stating that the rules governing the Legislative Council and the Assembly are different.
The state government is yet to formally announce whether it will constitute the SIT as recommended by the presiding officer.
