Pune: Protest Announced On June 29 To Demand Pune–Nashik Rail Route via Sangamner
Pune, June 27, 2026: A protest demanding the restoration of the originally proposed Pune–Nashik railway route via Sangamner and Narayangaon is set to take place on June 29, with local leaders announcing a road blockade to press their demand.
The agitation has been called by the Sangamner and Sinnar Local Action Committee, led by Nashik Graduate Constituency MLC Satyajeet Tambe. The protest comes after the Ministry of Railways decided to alter the alignment of the proposed Pune–Nashik semi-high-speed rail project.
The original route through Sangamner was dropped due to technical concerns related to the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). During a recent visit to Pune, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the revised rail corridor would instead pass through Shirdi and Ahilyanagar, with a Detailed Project Report (DPR) already prepared for the new alignment.
Tambe said the June 29 protest aims to persuade the Railways to reconsider the original route, arguing that a rail link through Sangamner, Narayangaon and nearby towns such as Manchar would significantly boost regional connectivity, trade and economic development.
As part of the agitation, demonstrators plan to stage a rasta roko in Sinnar, temporarily blocking traffic on the Pune–Nashik Highway and the Nashik–Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway.
Meanwhile, the Nashik district administration has appealed to the organisers to ensure that the protest does not disrupt traffic on the two major transport corridors. District Collector Ayush Prasad said the administration has urged the committee to adopt a form of protest that minimises inconvenience to commuters, considering the heavy traffic on both routes.
