Mumbai: Police suspect a technical malfunction after the steering wheel airbag of a parked car allegedly deployed without warning, causing fatal neck injuries during a used-car inspection.

A 25-year-old used-car dealer died in a freak accident after the steering wheel airbag of a parked car allegedly deployed unexpectedly while he was inspecting the vehicle on Mira Road in Mumbai.

The deceased, identified as Mohit Soni, was examining a nearly 15-year-old Honda car that had been brought for inspection before a possible purchase when the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, the vehicle was parked on the roadside and showed no signs of a recent collision or external damage. During the inspection, the steering wheel airbag suddenly deployed, and the plastic airbag cover reportedly struck Mohit on the right side of his neck with tremendous force.

Investigators said the impact caused severe neck injuries and heavy internal bleeding. He was rushed to Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Government Hospital in Bhayander, where doctors declared him dead.

Police have registered an accidental death case and are investigating whether a mechanical or electrical malfunction triggered the unexpected airbag deployment.

A senior automobile safety expert said, “Airbags are designed to save lives during collisions, but any unintended deployment while a vehicle is stationary is extremely rare and requires a thorough technical investigation.”

Preliminary examination found no evidence of a recent accident, although the vehicle was around 15 years old and reportedly had a valid fitness certificate.

Police believe the incident may not have been noticed immediately because the car was parked by the roadside and passers-by were unaware that an emergency had occurred inside the vehicle. Investigators suspect the delay in providing medical assistance may have worsened the outcome.

A forensic team has collected blood samples and examined the vehicle’s interior. Officials from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) are also expected to inspect the vehicle’s mechanical and electrical systems before submitting a detailed technical report.

Automobile engineers noted that modern airbags rely on electronic sensors and control modules. Investigators will examine whether a sensor malfunction, electrical fault, previous accident damage or unauthorised repairs may have contributed to the unexpected deployment.

While accidental airbag deployment remains uncommon, experts say the incident highlights the importance of careful inspection of older vehicles before purchase or repair.

Vehicle Safety: Do’s

  • Inspect used vehicles only in a well-lit, open and safe location.
  • Ask for the vehicle’s complete accident and service history before inspection.
  • Get older vehicles inspected by a qualified mechanic before purchasing them.
  • Check whether airbags have ever been deployed or replaced after an accident.
  • Disconnect the battery before carrying out repairs involving the steering wheel, dashboard or airbag system.
  • Use only authorised replacement parts and certified repair centres for airbag-related work.
  • Wear appropriate protective equipment when inspecting vehicle safety systems.
  • Seek immediate medical attention even if an airbag causes what appears to be a minor injury.

Vehicle Safety: Don’ts

  • Do not tamper with airbags, steering wheels or airbag wiring without proper training.
  • Do not ignore airbag warning lights on the dashboard.
  • Do not install duplicate or non-certified airbag components.
  • Do not assume an older vehicle’s airbag system is functioning correctly without inspection.
  • Do not stand directly in front of an airbag module while testing or repairing it.
  • Do not bypass electrical safety procedures while working on a vehicle.
  • Do not delay reporting any unexpected airbag deployment to the manufacturer, insurer and authorities.

Disclaimer: Police are continuing their investigation, and the exact cause of the alleged airbag deployment will be confirmed only after the forensic and technical examination reports are completed.
