27 June, 2026: The Tamil Nadu government has announced a new welfare scheme under which every eligible baby born in a government hospital will receive a one-gram gold ring. The initiative, named Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothira Thittam, is aimed at recognising newborns and supporting maternal welfare across the State.

The government has earmarked ₹755.83 crore annually for the implementation of the scheme. The benefit will be available to babies born in government hospitals to parents who are permanent residents of Tamil Nadu.

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will officially launch the scheme on September 15, the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai. However, the scheme will be implemented with retrospective effect from June 22, 2026, the Chief Minister’s birthday, making babies born on or after that date eligible for the benefit.

The gold ring initiative was one of the key promises made by Vijay during the Assembly election campaign as part of the ‘Vetri Tamizhagam’ vision document. While the promise was announced earlier, the government has now confirmed that each beneficiary will receive a one-gram gold ring.

According to the government, the scheme seeks to honour every child born in a government hospital while reinforcing its commitment to maternal and child healthcare. Tamil Nadu has already introduced several welfare measures for pregnant women and newborns, including financial assistance, free delivery services, emergency obstetric care, nutrition programmes, birth planning services, and the Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation (PICME) system.

Officials said these initiatives have played a significant role in improving maternal and child health indicators in the State, and the new gold ring scheme is expected to further encourage institutional deliveries in government hospitals.
