Mumbai, July 5, 2026: All government, private and civic-run schools and colleges in Mumbai will remain closed on Monday after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday in view of the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) orange alert for heavy rainfall.

The civic body said the decision was taken to ensure the safety of students as the IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds across the city. However, government and private offices will continue to function as usual.

The BMC has also advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and step outdoors only if essential, as heavy rain is expected to continue over the next 24 hours.

Mumbai and its neighbouring regions have been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall over the past several days, resulting in widespread waterlogging, traffic disruptions and multiple incidents of tree falls across the city.

According to officials, three people, including a schoolboy, have lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Mumbai since June 30.

Heavy rainfall also affected neighbouring Thane and Palghar districts on Sunday. A 17-year-old boy drowned in a swollen river, while two people were injured after a portion of a balcony collapsed.

In a separate incident in Navi Mumbai’s Vashi area, a concrete slab from the second-floor balcony of the Ram Niwas Building collapsed, injuring a man and a woman.

Authorities have urged citizens to stay alert, follow weather advisories and avoid venturing into waterlogged or flood-prone areas unless absolutely necessary.
