Pune, July 5, 2026: In a major crackdown on food safety violations, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered the temporary closure of the popular Mathura Pure Veg restaurant on Jangli Maharaj Road until laboratory test reports of its food samples are received.

The action has been taken under the statewide ‘Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra’ campaign, which aims to ensure that consumers are served safe and hygienic food.

In addition, the FDA has suspended the licences of seven prominent restaurants in Pune over alleged serious violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act. The action follows surprise inspections conducted under the supervision of Tukaram Mundhe.

Between July 1 and July 3, FDA teams inspected nearly 70 hotels and restaurants across Maharashtra as part of the special drive.

During inspections in Pune, officials reportedly found multiple violations, including unhygienic kitchen conditions, poor-quality food, storage of expired food items, improper food storage practices, and non-compliance with mandatory food safety regulations. Authorities also observed that several establishments had failed to maintain basic standards of cleanliness.

The FDA stated that the inspections are part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen food safety enforcement across the state and ensure compliance with prescribed hygiene and quality standards.
