Pimpri-Chinchwad, July 9, 2026: The death toll in the Moshi Waste-to-Energy plant collapse has risen to three, while six workers remain missing as rescue teams continue a massive search operation at the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) garbage depot in Moshi.

The tragedy unfolded at around 1:45 pm on Wednesday, when a massive garbage mound, weakened by continuous heavy rainfall, slid onto the three-storey administrative and canteen building of the Waste-to-Energy project, causing the reinforced concrete (RCC) structure to collapse.

A total of 23 workers were inside the building at the time of the incident, most of them in the changing room during their lunch break. Five workers managed to escape on their own, while rescue teams later pulled nine more survivors from the debris, taking the total number of rescued workers to 14.

During the ongoing rescue operation, teams recovered the first body from beneath the collapsed structure. Two more bodies have since been located under the debris, though officials said they were yet to be retrieved at the time of the latest update. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has officially confirmed three fatalities in the accident.

Rescue operations are being jointly carried out by the NDRF, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Pimpri Chinchwad Fire Brigade, Army personnel from Dehu Road, and other emergency agencies. Heavy earthmoving equipment, including excavators, is being used to clear the massive garbage heap.

However, the operation remains challenging as large volumes of waste continue to surround both sides of the collapsed building, slowing excavation efforts. Rescue personnel have drilled through the first-floor slab and cut steel reinforcements to gain access to trapped workers inside the structure.

PCMC Commissioner Dr. Vijay Suryawanshi said the garbage mound, located nearly 30 metres away from the building, became unstable due to incessant rainfall and slid downhill before crashing into the structure with tremendous force, pushing the building sideways and causing its collapse.

Rescue teams have recovered the first body from the debris of the collapsed building at the Moshi garbage depot in Pimpri-Chinchwad.

According to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), two more bodies have been located beneath the rubble, but they are yet to be retrieved due to the challenging rescue conditions.

With this, the official death toll in the Moshi building collapse has risen to three. Rescue operations are continuing on a war footing to locate the remaining six missing workers believed to be trapped under the debris.

NDRF Commandant Santosh Singh Bahadur said rescue personnel are working continuously despite difficult conditions at the site and remain focused on reaching those still trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
