Pune: Baner Residents Demand Immediate Action Over Waterlogging, Staff Shortage At Sub Post Office
Pune, July 17, 2026: The Baner Balewadi Nagrik Manch (BBNM) has submitted written representations to the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Pune West Division, and the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Aundh-Baner Ward Office, seeking urgent intervention to resolve long-standing issues at the Baner Sub Post Office.
The post office, which operates from a PMC building constructed on the amenity space of Sai Datt Society, caters to thousands of residents from Baner and nearby areas. However, citizens have been facing repeated difficulties during the monsoon due to severe waterlogging outside the premises.
BBNM stated that this year too, knee-deep water accumulated near the entrance of the post office, making it difficult for citizens and employees to access the facility. The situation was reportedly worse last year when overflowing water from the Dev Nadi resulted in waist-deep flooding, forcing the post office to remain closed for several days.
Senior citizens, women, and persons with disabilities were among those who faced major inconvenience due to the flooding.
According to BBNM, the recurring waterlogging is mainly due to the low-lying area in front of the post office, inadequate stormwater drainage infrastructure, and damage to the retaining wall along the Dev River, allowing floodwater to enter the premises during heavy rainfall.
The residents’ group has also raised concerns over the shortage of staff at the Baner Sub Post Office. The facility provides several essential services, including Aadhaar enrolment and updates, postal banking, savings schemes, life certificate services, insurance facilities, National Savings Certificate (NSC), courier services, and other postal operations. However, limited manpower has resulted in long waiting periods and inconvenience for citizens.
In its representations, BBNM has demanded permanent measures to address waterlogging, repairs to the damaged Dev River retaining wall, improvement of the stormwater drainage system, a safe access route to the post office during monsoon, deployment of additional staff, and clarification regarding large pipes lying near the post office premises for several months.
“A post office is an essential public service. Citizens should not have to walk through floodwater to access basic facilities or wait for hours due to staff shortages. We urge the authorities to take immediate and permanent corrective action,” said BBNM.
The issue is being followed up by Adv. S. O. Mashalkar (President), Adv. Sanjeev Jadhav, Dilip Borkar, Vijaya Patil, and Rajendra Mahajan on behalf of Baner Balewadi Nagrik Manch.
