Deputy chief minister of Maharashtra Ajit Pawar rushed to visit the spot where the fire incident took place yesterday at the Serum institute of India in its Manjari. The incident unfortunately took lives of five innocent people who were working on the floor where the fire broke out.

The magnitude of the fire was such that a total of ten fire tenders were pressed into action to douse it. Ajit Pawar assured that detailed enquiry shall be made into incident.to.ascertain the exact cause of the fire which led to loss of the lives as well as the property.

Adar Poonawala of Serum Institute of India stated that, “I would like to reassure all governments & the public that there would be no loss of #COVISHIELD production due to multiple production buildings that I had kept in reserve to deal with such contingencies at @SerumInstIndia.”

A statement From Cyrus S. Poonawalla, Chairman & Managing Director, Serum Institute of India said, “Today, January 21, 2021 was an extremely sorrowful day for all of us at Serum Institute of India.

Regrettably, there were losses of lives in the fire that broke out in our under installation facility situated at the Special Economic Zone at Manjri. We are deeply saddened and offer our condolences to the families of the departed. In this regard, we will be offering a compensation of INR 25 lakhs to each of the families, in addition to the mandated amount as per the norms. We would like to extend our gratitude to everyone for their concerns and prayers in these distressing times.”

Safety audit of the workers was done or not shall also be checked at Serum Institute of India and information regarding the same has been demanded from the company’s administration, said, Commissioner, labour welfare for state, Mahendra Kalyankar.
