Jejuri, 11 September – A remarkable spectacle has unfolded at the Nazre Dam (Malharsagar) near Jejuri as flamingo birds have made their inaugural appearance, arriving ahead of their usual schedule. This unprecedented visitation has captivated both locals and tourists alike.

The Malharsagar Dam, nestled in the picturesque Jayadri Valley, is now graced by the presence of flamingos, a species known for their extensive migratory journeys from Mongolia in the European continent during the typical winter season. Astonishingly, these majestic birds have chosen to grace the dam’s waters earlier than anticipated, sharing their aquatic realm with fellow avian companions such as spoonbills, Chitrabalkans, blue-footed storks, and other exotic species.

Despite the dam’s dwindling water levels due to persistent drought conditions, these intrepid travelers have made an impressive migration, with more than seventy flamingos currently making Nazre Dam their temporary home.

However, the pressing concern among locals revolves around the duration of their stay. In the absence of rainfall, the flamingos may be compelled to seek refuge in alternative reservoirs. These remarkable birds have journeyed from far-flung regions, including Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Israel, as well as the Indian states of Rajasthan and Gujarat.

In the past, flamingos graced the regions of Mumbai and Ujni Solapur annually. Nevertheless, citizens and bird enthusiasts are celebrating the early and unprecedented appearance of these magnificent creatures in the Jejuri Malharsagar Dam area, setting the stage for a unique natural spectacle in the heart of Maharashtra.
