Pune Residents Hold Signature Drive to Protest PMC's Proposal For Tree Removal in Koregaon Park
To voice citizens’ concerns, objections etc regarding tree felling in Koregaon Park, several Pune activists have started a signature campaign.
Speaking to Pune Pulse, Ameet Singh, Core Member, Pune River Revival, said “Previously, we had filed objections regarding this, still the PMC cut the trees in Koregaon Park. Hence, we have started this signature campaign in which we are aiming to get the maximum number of signatures from Punekars. We are going to submit all the signatures & voice our objections to the PMC till 15th January.”
The signature form of raising objections & concerns regarding Koregaon Park tree felling says “We observed the removal of over 80 old-growth trees at the junction of North Main Road, merging into Kalyaninagar via the Aga Khan Bridge. The reasoning provided was for the city’s development and the alleviation of traffic congestion.”
The signature form further says “While we understand the need for development, widening roads under the latest FSI laws raises concerns about denser neighborhoods and increased traffic, as permitted by the UDCPR. We are curious about your long-term plans for tree felling and when you anticipate being satisfied with the current scale of development.”
The signature form further continues “Recently 80 trees were felled at the end of north main road in Kalyaninagar. A simple solution such as giving a dedicated free left to Kalyaninagar would have reduced the congestion on this road by half. The imminent reconstruction of St Miras Bridge has brought to our attention the potential risk to several significant old banyan trees in the vicinity. We propose considering alternatives such as an elevated road from Yerawada Junction to RSI Chowk to spare these valuable trees.”
The signature form further says “Koregaon Park, once characterized by a balance of nature, is now grappling with traffic congestion, skyscrapers, untreated sewage, water scarcity, and a depleted groundwater table. The recent tree removals exacerbate our concerns for the environment, and we urge you to reconsider the approach to development.”
The signature form further states “We implore you to think beyond short-term gains and prioritize the preservation of our century-old trees. We understand the challenges of development but request transparent discussions and deliberations on alternative plans that will safeguard our environment.”
