A recently surfaced viral image depicts an auto-rickshaw plying on the newly inaugurated Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), triggering public concern.

This follows earlier instances of individuals turning a section of the bridge, marked with a 100 kmph speed limit, into a picnic spot, capturing selfies and littering. The presence of the auto-rickshaw on the MTHL, where such vehicles are prohibited, has garnered criticism for the apparent disregard of rules.

For those unfamiliar, auto-rickshaws are prohibited on the MTHL, spanning from Sewri in Mumbai to Nhava Sheva in Raigad district, inaugurated just recently.

According to additional information from the Mumbai Traffic Police’s official handle, “Entry of the following vehicles: Motorcycle, Moped, 3 Wheeler Tempo, Auto Rickshaw, Tractor, Tractor with unladen trolley, Animal drawn vehicles & slow-moving vehicle will not be allowed on MTHL.

Despite being India’s longest sea bridge, promising a significant reduction in travel time, the MTHL witnessed violations shortly after its public opening. In response, the Navi Mumbai police have reportedly booked over 144 motorists who obstructed traffic and parked on Atal Setu, the bridge section of the MTHL, under the Motor Vehicle Act.

These incidents underscore the need for more stringent enforcement to ensure the optimal public use of this infrastructural marvel constructed for Rs. 17,840 crore, featuring six lanes and spanning 16.5 km over the sea.
