Mumbai: Bollywood film director and producer Karan Johar has moved the Bombay High Court against the makers of the Hindi film “Shaadi ke Director Karan aur Johar,” seeking to prevent them from using his name in the film’s title. Johar filed the plea on Wednesday, requesting an urgent stay on the film’s release, scheduled for June 14, 2024.

The plea was mentioned before Justice RI Chagla’s bench, which agreed to hear the matter on Thursday. Johar argued that the film’s title directly references his name, infringing on his personal rights and his rights to publicity and privacy. He claimed that the filmmakers are exploiting his goodwill and reputation by using his ‘brand name’ without authorization.

The suit also highlighted that the film’s trailer and posters have been widely distributed in public areas and on social media, causing irreparable damage to his reputation. “These trailers and posters have caused and are continuing to cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation of Johar. Further, such a release of the film with the title containing his brand name ‘Karan Johar,’ together or in parts, will cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation which he has gained after investing huge amounts of time, effort, and money,” the suit stated.

Earlier this year, Johar shared a cryptic post on Instagram expressing his sadness at being mocked in a reality television show. He wrote, “I was sitting with my mother watching television. I saw a reality comedy show promo, which airs on a so-called respectable channel. A comic artist is doing a very bad mimicry of me. I can expect this from trolls or those people who say anything by hiding their face or name. But when those people are from their own industry, they make fun of you. That too of a person who has been a part of the industry for more than 25 years. Your doing like this shows how we are living in these times. Now it doesn’t make me angry, but makes me sad.”
