Google Chrome Introduces Performance Alerts, Retains Third-Party Cookies Under Pressure
Google’s Chrome browser will notify users of tabs draining system resources while retaining third-party cookies due to advertiser pressure and regulatory challenges.
Google Chrome will now notify users of tabs using excessive system resources and has decided to retain third-party cookies. The browser will soon alert users when a tab consumes too many resources. According to a report by WindowsReport (via Android Authority), Chrome will display a small window on the screen with a notification reading “Performance issue alert,” accompanied by a ‘Fix now’ button to disable the tab and free up resources.
Users can manually enable this performance issue alert by typing “chrome://flags” in the browser to access experimental features. They must then enable #performance-intervention-ui and #performance-intervention-demo-mode settings. After restarting the browser, users can check the alert by navigating to chrome://Settings>Performance>General, and then heading to ‘chrome://discards’ to select ‘Trigger performance CPU intervention.’
When Chrome detects a performance issue with a tab, it will give users the option to either ‘Fix now’ or ‘Dismiss,’ allowing them to resolve the issue or maintain the tabs as they are.
In another development, Google has announced it will no longer phase out third-party cookies in its Chrome browser. This decision is a significant shift from the company’s earlier stance on user privacy and data protection. Initially, Google had pledged to eliminate third-party cookies by 2022, a move seen as a major step towards enhancing user privacy. However, due to mounting pressure from advertisers and regulatory challenges, Google has decided to reverse its course.
