Aamir Khan has revealed that his long-cherished dream project, Mahabharat, may mark the culmination of his cinematic journey. While promoting his upcoming release Sitaare Zameen Par, the actor shared that once that film is out, he plans to fully commit to Mahabharat a project he described as so monumental, it could very well be his last.
Speaking on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Aamir said, “It’s layered, it has emotion, it has scale everything you find in the world, you will find in Mahabharat.” He called it the one story that has stayed with him for years, something he has always wanted to bring to the big screen.
When asked whether it might be his final film, Aamir reflected, “Maybe after doing this, I’ll feel that I have nothing left to do. The material is so powerful, I might not be able to do anything beyond this.” He added, “I hope I die with my shoes on, but this is the one thing I can think of. Perhaps after this, I won’t feel the need to do anything else.”
Aamir had earlier described the project as his most ambitious in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, even saying that the script alone could take years to develop.
Interestingly, Aamir has not yet decided if he will act in the film. Casting, he explained, will depend entirely on who suits each role best. “We’ll see who we should cast based on who’s appropriate for which part,” he said.
As for directing, Aamir is uncertain whether he’ll take the director’s chair, noting that Mahabharat is likely to be a massive, multi-film undertaking. “You can’t tell the Mahabharat in a single film,” he noted. “We are looking at a large-scale project that will probably require multiple films and maybe even multiple directors.”
He emphasized that the storytelling will need a collaborative effort to meet the envisioned scale and timeline. “To complete it within a certain time, we will need more than one director,” Aamir said, hinting at a sweeping production that could reshape Indian cinema.
With this revelation, Mahabharat is shaping up not just as a film but as a defining milestone in Aamir Khan’s storied career.
