The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has registered a case against a district and sessions judge in Satara and three others for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 5 lakh to facilitate a favourable bail order in a criminal case.
According to the ACB, the judge and the three others demanded the money from a 24-year-old woman from Pune to grant bail to her father, who is in jail under judicial custody in an alleged Rs 41 lakh job fraud case.
The woman approached the ACB after being approached by one of the three individuals, who offered to help secure a favourable bail order in exchange for the bribe. The ACB carried out a verification process from December 3 to December 9 to establish the bribe demand.
The FIR alleges that on December 9, the judge himself drove his car to a place outside the Satara court complex to meet the woman and one of the middlemen. The judge discussed the deal with the middleman in a code language, according to the FIR.
The ACB has invoked offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The case was filed after the verification process established the bribe demand.
The ACB is now seeking permission from the Bombay High Court to arrest the judge. “We are initiating the process to secure the Bombay High Court’s permission to arrest the judge,” an ACB official said. The case has raised concerns about corruption within the judiciary.
