A spectacular ceremony was witnessed at the commissioning of medical cadets at the Bharadwaj Auditorium, Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, on 12 July 2025. Of the five cadets commissioned, one has been inducted into the Indian Air Force and four into the Indian Army, inthe august presence of senior dignitaries, veterans, faculty and proud parents.

The ceremony was graced by Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, AVSM, VSM, Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), as the Reviewing Officer. Admiral Sarin congratulated the newly commissioned officers and wished them success and fulfilment in their future careers, as they embark on a journey of service and dedication to the nation.

The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, has taken a pioneering leap in the field of genetic diagnostics and therapy with its state-of-the-art Genome Sequencing Laboratory, equipped with cutting-edge Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) platforms. The lab is designed to support advanced research in inherited diseases, oncology, transplant medicine, and reproductive health, enabling precise diagnosis of rare genetic disorders and molecular profiling of malignancies.

AFMC’s Department of Medical Research (DMR) and its Multi-disciplinary Research Unit (MRU) have been instrumental in launching over a dozen molecular research projects. The projects at DMR also encompass epigenetics in diabetes, micro RNA expression in various diseases, gene polymorphisms in cancer and autoimmune disorders. This facility will not only serve the Armed Forces but also contribute to the broader medical community through groundbreaking research and improved diagnostics.

Other than research, AFMC has made medical simulation an essential part of its training curriculum at all levels with a vision to improve skills and understanding towards imparting holistic care. These simulators replicate real-life scenarios, allowing students to practice advanced life trauma support, basic and advanced cardiac life support, surgical, obstetric and laparoscopic procedures in a controlled environment.

AFMC’s lays great emphasis on students’ participation in co-curricular and sports activities in order to inculcate discipline, creativity, and physical fitness.NCC is also an essential and integral part of curriculum considered essential for personality development of medical cadets. With participation in various community care and awareness activities like blood donation, vaccination and other health camps the institute has an earnest vision of making not only an accomplished professional but also a responsible citizen of this nation.
