Pune: In response to Turkey’s public support for Pakistan during recent tensions with India, traders in Pune have intensified their participation in the nationwide “Ban Turkey” movement. After halting the purchase of Turkish apples, the Pune Spice and Dry Fruits Association has now announced a boycott of apricot and hazelnut imports from Türkiye.

Navin Goyal, Committee Member of the Pune Spice and Dry Fruits Association, told Pune Pulse, “Turkey’s decision to support Pakistan during the India-Pakistan conflict by supplying drones has deeply disappointed us. Despite India standing by Türkiye in times of crisis, they chose to align with Pakistan at a crucial moment. As a result, we have decided to halt all dry fruit trade with them. We are hoping that alongwith traders, even importers take this decision.”

He added that India’s strong consumer base played a significant role in Türkiye’s economy. “Every year, Türkiye earned over a few thousand crores from business with India. Our collective decision to end this trade will severely impact their economy. We have verbally informed the importers too and are hoping that they will stand with us in such critical times ,” Goyal emphasized.

Support for the boycott is also resonating with customers at the retail level.

Local vendors have also observed the shift in consumer behaviour. If collectively all traders and importers ban their products, we are hopeful that their economy will face the brunt. We are standing in support of our country, he added.

Pune citizens are now turning to alternatives from other countries and local sources, ensuring the boycott gains momentum across markets and stores.
