Ahmedabad, June 12 — A major tragedy unfolded in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon when an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed minutes after take-off, killing at least five medical students and injuring more than 40 others. The aircraft, operating as Flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London, crashed into the doctors’ hostel of a medical college near the city airport around 1:30 PM.

Officials confirmed that the pilot issued a mayday call shortly after departure, after which communication with air traffic control was lost. The plane, carrying 242 passengers, was reportedly involved in a critical incident that led to its crash within minutes of take-off.

Visuals from the crash site showed thick plumes of grey smoke rising from the debris as emergency teams rushed to the scene. Over two dozen ambulances were deployed, and many of the injured were quickly transported to nearby hospitals. Local police have sealed off the area and diverted traffic to aid rescue operations.
