Mumbai, July 21, 2025: Passengers aboard an Air India flight had a tense moment on Monday after the aircraft skidded off the runway during landing at Mumbai airport in heavy rain.

The flight, AI2744, arriving from Kochi, experienced a runway excursion shortly after touchdown but was able to taxi safely to the parking bay. All passengers and crew disembarked safely, and no injuries were reported.

“Flight AI2744 encountered heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion. The aircraft taxied safely to the gate and has been grounded for detailed checks. The safety of our passengers and crew remains our highest priority,” an Air India spokesperson said in a statement.

Airport operations continued as normal, though officials remained on alert due to adverse weather conditions.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more intense rain for Mumbai over the next 48 hours. Strong winds, thunderstorms, and waterlogging have already caused significant traffic disruptions across the city. On Monday, several key roads reported flooding, and the Andheri Subway was briefly closed for safety reasons.

The IMD has issued warnings for lightning and gusty winds up to 40 kmph, urging residents to remain cautious as the monsoon continues to batter the region.Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Spokesperson told Pune Pulse, “An incoming aircraft from Kochi experienced a runway excursion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Mumbai at 09.27 hours on 21 July 2025. CSMIA’s emergency response teams were immediately activated to manage the runway excursion. All passengers and crew are safe.
There are minor damages reported to the airport’s primary runway – 09/27. In order to ensure continuity of operations, the Secondary Runway 14/32 – has been activated. At CSMIA, safety always remains our highest priority.”
