Ahmedabad: In the tragic Air India plane crash that took place in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on June 12, a young student from Akola, Aishwarya Toshniwal, had a narrow escape. The plane crashed into a hostel building where Aishwarya was sleeping on the fifth floor. She saved herself by wrapping a blanket around her and running through smoke and fire.

Aishwarya is a second-year DM Oncopathology student at the Gujarat Cancer Research Institute in Ahmedabad. She had just returned from Akola after celebrating her grandfather’s birthday. While sleeping in her hostel room, she suddenly heard a loud noise. When she woke up, the whole place was filled with smoke. Realizing the danger, she quickly wrapped herself in a blanket and found her way down from the fifth floor through thick smoke. She suffered burn injuries on her face, hands, and legs.

Father Shocked After Her Call

Right after escaping, Aishwarya called her father, Amol Toshniwal, who was at his saree shop in Durga Chowk, Akola. He was shocked to hear about the crash and rushed home immediately. “We were watching the news on TV. It felt like everything stopped. But we are thankful to God that our daughter is safe,” he said.

Family in Tears

Her mother Madhuri and grandparents were also in tears. Her grandfather said, “She had come to celebrate my birthday, but had to face such a big accident. We are thankful to God that she survived.” The Toshniwal family also expressed their deep sorrow for the people who were injured or lost their lives in the crash. Aishwarya said, “This was the most frightening experience of my life. I will never forget it.”

265 Dead in the Ahmedabad Air Crash

The Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad killed 265 people. Out of these, 241 were passengers on board, and 24 people died in the area where the plane crashed.

Ten people from Maharashtra also lost their lives. These included Chief Pilot Sumeet Sabharwal and crew members Deepak Pathak, Maithili Patil, Roshni Songhare, Aparna Mahadik, and Sainita Chakravarty. The deceased passengers included Mayur Patil, Yasha Kamdar, Asha Pawar, and Mahadev Pawar.
