Ajit Pawar Advocates Two-Child Policy, Suggests Election Ban For Larger Families

Ajit Pawar Reviews Pune’s Ganeshotsav Readiness, Confirms Purandar Airport Progress, Promises Early Opening of Sinhagad Road Flyover
Pune, August 9, 2025: Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar has voiced concern over rising population levels, urging citizens to limit their families to two children. He further proposed that individuals with more than two children should be barred from contesting Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
Pawar made these remarks during a felicitation event for the parents of a two-year-old girl who was kidnapped from Pune’s Katraj area on July 26 and rescued within 24 hours by the police. While interacting with the mother, Pawar learned that she had twins and was expecting another child.
Highlighting the strain that unchecked population growth could place on governance, he said, “If this trend continues, even if Lord Brahma himself descends to earth, it will be difficult to manage. Everyone must take responsibility. Whether it’s a boy or a girl, stop at two children.”
Pawar noted that there are already laws preventing individuals with more than two children from contesting civic, zilla parishad, and taluka panchayat elections. “Many people question why this rule doesn’t apply to Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assembly. While it is not within our authority right now, if it comes under our purview in the future, we will consider introducing such a law,” he added.
The kidnapping case that brought the parents into the spotlight involved a coordinated police effort. Teams from Bharati Vidyapeeth police station and the crime branch used clues from over 200 CCTV cameras and human intelligence to trace the girl to Dharashiv, arresting six suspects.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar jointly honoured the police team and the child’s parents during their visit to Pune for various police-related projects.
