Actor shares the bizarre experience of 15-20 women showing up at his door dressed in white sarees after his character’s death.
Amar Upadhyay, renowned for portraying Mihir Virani in the iconic soap opera Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, recently opened up about a peculiar and unsettling incident that occurred after his character’s death on the show. In a candid conversation with Entertainment Live, he described the overwhelming fan reaction to his exit, which not only stunned viewers but also left celebrities calling the offices of Balaji Telefilms in disbelief.
Amar recounted the oddest fan reaction he received following Mihir’s death. One morning, he answered the doorbell to find 15-20 women standing outside, all dressed in white sarees. When he asked them why they were dressed this way, they simply replied with “Kuch nahi” (nothing). However, upon further questioning by his mother, the women explained that they were dressed in mourning due to Mihir’s death on the show.
Amar’s mother, visibly upset by the situation, scolded the women, saying, “Are you mad? He has died in the show! What are you doing here? Run away now. He is my son.” This interaction left an indelible impression on Amar, revealing the intensity of the audience’s connection to the show.
Amar’s character’s death marked a significant turning point in both the show and his career. The intensity of fan reactions left the actor grappling with anger from viewers. Eventually, he made a brief return to the show in 2002 due to popular demand, but soon left again to pursue a Bollywood career. His departure opened the door for actors like Inder Kumar and later Ronit Roy to take over the role of Mihir Virani.
Post his television fame, Amar ventured into Bollywood, appearing in films such as LOC Kargil, It’s My Life and Kaagaz. While his cinematic career did not replicate the success he had on TV, he continued to make appearances in various television shows, including Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand, Saathiya – Pyar Ka Naya Ehsaas, and Kasautii Zindagii Kay.
More recently, Amar made a brief appearance in the Bollywood film Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, starring Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani, and Tabu.
