Mumbai: Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan recently shared emotional stories about his bond with the late industrialist Ratan Tata, calling him one of the most humble and grounded people he had ever met. Speaking on an episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 16, where filmmaker Farah Khan and actor Boman Irani were guests, Mr. Bachchan remembered some unforgettable moments with the Tata Group Chairman.

Recalling one such incident, Bachchan said he once flew with Ratan Tata to London. After landing at Heathrow Airport, Tata got separated from his staff and needed to make a phone call. “He walked into a phone booth and then came to me and asked, ‘Amitabh, can I borrow some money? I don’t have change for the call,’” Bachchan said. He smiled while remembering the moment, adding, “He was such a simple man. It’s hard to explain how special he was.”

Another story highlighted Tata’s modest lifestyle. Bachchan shared that a friend was surprised when Ratan Tata asked for a ride home after an event. “He told my friend, ‘I live behind your house, can you drop me?’ He even said he didn’t have a car,” Bachchan recalled. “Can you imagine someone like Ratan Tata saying that?”

Apart from their personal connection, the two also worked together professionally. In 2004, Tata Infomedia Ltd., a part of the Tata Group, produced the film Aetbaar, starring Amitabh Bachchan. Though the movie didn’t do well at the box office and suffered a loss of ₹3.5 crore, it showed Ratan Tata’s quiet support for the arts and cinema.

When the news of Ratan Tata’s passing broke, Mr. Bachchan was among the first to pay tribute on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote:

“Just came to learn of the passing of Shri Ratan Tata… was working very late. An era has ended — a most respected, humble yet visionary leader of immense foresight and resolve. Spent some wonderful moments with him during several campaigns we were involved in together. My prayers.”

Mr. Bachchan’s words echoed the feelings of many — that with Ratan Tata’s passing, the country lost not just a great business leader but also a kind and humble human being.
