In a groundbreaking move, the Army Institute of Technology (AIT) has begun admitting children of Air Force and Navy personnel into its prestigious engineering programs. This historic decision, approved by the Army Welfare Education Society (AWES), marks a significant step towards jointness and tri-services integration.

For the academic year 2024-25, AIT has enrolled 11 wards of Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel and five of Indian Navy (IN) personnel in its BE programs, in addition to two wards of IAF and one of Navy in its ME program. This development is a welcome change, as earlier, only children of Army personnel were eligible for admission to the institute.

Brigadier Abhay Bhat (Retd), Director of AIT while speaking with a media person said, “We have admitted these students equitably across all engineering streams in the institute for 19 sanctioned seats.” This decision was made at the highest level of the Armed forces, reflecting the institution’s commitment to fostering greater collaboration and unity among the services.

Established in 1994, AIT is located on the Dighi campus, about 25 km from Pune, and is affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University. The institute boasts a strong academic excellence track record, which has led to one of the best placements over the past few decades.

The move has been welcomed by officials from the Air Force and Navy, who see this as a positive step towards providing greater opportunities for their wards. A Group Captain noted that the IAF and IN do not have dedicated higher education institutes for their wards, making this development a significant relief for parents.

As AIT continues to expand its reach and reputation, this historic decision marks a significant milestone in the institution’s journey. With its strong academic record and commitment to fostering greater unity among the services, AIT is poised to become a beacon of excellence in engineering education.
