On December 21, the United Nations General Assembly celebrated the first World Meditation Day.

To commemorate this occasion, the Permanent Mission of India hosted an event at the UN headquarters in New York, led by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the founder of the Art of Living Foundation and a well-known spiritual leader. The event, titled ‘World Meditates with Gurudev,’ attracted over 8.5 million participants both online and offline. People from more than 180 countries took part, making it one of the largest collective meditation sessions ever recorded. According to a press release from the foundation, this achievement earned recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records, the Asia Book of Records, and the World Records Union. A total of six records were set during this event.

The event started at the United Nations and concluded with a live session hosted by Gurudev from the World Trade Center in New York. Millions tuned in to the live stream, highlighting the growing interest in meditation as a means to achieve mindfulness and inner peace.

Before the session, Shankar stated, “Meditation is the journey from understanding through thought to truly feeling what you know. It assists people in moving from excessive thinking to fully experiencing the present. Meditation is not about being inactive; it fosters a balanced, dynamic, and serene mindset.”

As per the press release, the event gathered a wide range of participants, including farmers, corporate workers, military members, healthcare professionals, students, and homemakers. Educational institutions for visually impaired children and prisons also took part, showcasing the initiative’s extensive reach.

Public figures, global leaders, and professionals from various sectors recognized the significance of the effort, acknowledging meditation’s importance in our fast-paced lives.

Overall, the event represented a significant step in advancing mindfulness on a global scale.
