New scheme offers cashless hospital treatment across India for seniors, ensuring accessible healthcare and reduced family costs.

The Indian government has launched the Ayushman Bharat Vaya Vandana scheme, a new healthcare initiative providing senior citizens aged 70 and above with an additional Rs 5 lakh in healthcare coverage annually. Announced earlier this month by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this scheme expands the existing Ayushman Bharat-PMJAY (Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana) health coverage, ensuring free treatment for seniors regardless of their income.

Under the Ayushman Bharat Vaya Vandana scheme, seniors can receive cost-free treatment at AB PMJAY-empanelled hospitals across India. To access these benefits, eligible individuals can acquire an Ayushman Bharat Vaya Vandana card, available through the National Health Authority’s (NHA) beneficiary portal or Ayushman app, or in-person at empanelled hospitals and common services centers (CSCs).

This Rs 5 lakh coverage is allocated per family, with the extra amount exclusively for members aged 70 or older. The program also mandates Aadhaar-based e-KYC for seamless registration and issuance of Ayushman cards to eligible citizens.

The scheme addresses critical healthcare needs for the elderly, including assistance for those managing chronic health issues like diabetes and hypertension, and aims to reduce the financial strain of healthcare costs on families. The government’s focus on equitable healthcare access will significantly raise senior healthcare standards, offering a comprehensive healthcare safety net to older adults across the country.
