In a move to curb spam and fraudulent calls, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced two dedicated phone number series for banks and financial institutions. This initiative aims to make it easier for customers to identify legitimate communication from their banks and avoid scams.

Key Changes:

  • Transaction-Related Calls: Banks will now use phone numbers starting with 1600 for all transaction-related communications. Any genuine call or SMS related to your financial transactions will originate from this number series.
  • Promotional Calls and SMS: Numbers beginning with 140 will be exclusively used for marketing calls and promotional messages, such as offers on personal loans, credit cards, and insurance.

This step is part of RBI’s efforts to tackle the growing problem of spam and fraud. With scammers increasingly posing as bank representatives to deceive customers, this measure will help users distinguish between legitimate and fraudulent calls.
