The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has partially extended its recently implemented SOPs on the Indian team to the 10 IPL franchises ahead of the 2025 edition, covering players’ travel by only team bus and barring the entry of families in dressing rooms even on non-match days. This approach may improve team unity and performance, as players will encounter fewer distractions and have increased opportunities to focus on their game.

After India’s defeat in the Test series in Australia, the BCCI implemented a series of regulations that prohibited personal managers from accompanying the team on the bus and restricted the presence of players’ families during tours. While these specific standard operating procedures cannot be directly applied to a multi-team event like the IPL, several of them have been adapted for use in the world’s leading T20 league.

“Players to use the team bus while coming for practice. Teams may travel in two batches. On practice days (during pre-tournament & tournament), only accredited staff is allowed in the dressing room and on the field of play. The family members of players and friends to travel in a different vehicle and can watch team practice from the hospitality area. For extended support staff (throw down specialist/net bowlers) list needs to be submitted for approval to BCCI. Once approved, non-match day accreditations will be issued for the same,” says a note issued by BCCI to team managers.

“In our franchise, the families and even the team owners were not permitted in the dressing room even on non-match days. Having said that, some of the players used to travel separately and not on the team bus after a game. It won’t be allowed from this season onwards,”  says a top official of an IPL franchise.

Players will also face fines if they fail to bring their accreditation card to the venue or if they attend the post-match presentation in loose-fitting or sleeveless attire.

“In the post-match presentation, floppies and sleeveless jerseys are not allowed. Failure to do so will result in warning on the first instance. On the second instance, there will be a financial penalty,” says BCCI.

The board has also cautioned the batters against striking the advertising LED board located beyond the boundary ropes.

Players and support personnel are prohibited from sitting in front of the LED boards. The sponsorship team will designate specific areas around the field of play where substitutes can be seated with towels and water bottles, as stated by the BCCI.

These regulations are anticipated to greatly influence the players and teams involved in the IPL. By restricting family attendance and implementing stringent travel guidelines, the BCCI seeks to foster a more professional and concentrated atmosphere.

This approach may improve team unity and performance, as players will encounter fewer distractions and have increased opportunities to focus on their game.

The implementation of these regulations has elicited varied responses from both players and fans. Some individuals value the focus on discipline and professionalism, while others believe that these measures could be excessively limiting.
