Before You Travel, Know This Hidden Indian Railways Rule — TTEs Cannot Disturb You at Night
Indian Railways has a little-known rule that can spare night-time passengers from an unwelcome disturbance. Under the regulation, Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) are prohibited from conducting routine ticket checks in Sleeper and AC coaches between 10 pm and 6 am.
Why the Rule Exists
The move is aimed at ensuring passengers can rest peacefully during overnight journeys. Many travellers have complained about being woken up for ticket inspection in the middle of the night, disrupting their sleep. The rule addresses this by banning ticket checks during designated “quiet hours.”
When Checks Are Allowed
There is one exception — if a passenger boards the train after 10 pm, the TTE is permitted to verify their ticket. However, disturbing passengers already on board without a valid reason is considered a violation of railway policy.
What to Do if the Rule Is Broken
If a TTE wakes you up or repeatedly asks for your ticket without cause during quiet hours, you can lodge a complaint by calling the Railway Helpline at 139. The service operates 24×7, and officials claim that action is taken promptly.
Other Night-Time Regulations
To maintain a calm environment, Indian Railways also switches off the main coach lights after 10 pm, prohibits playing music or videos without headphones, and discourages loud conversations. Cleaning staff activity is also reduced at night.
The Goal
These measures are part of the railway’s broader effort to make overnight train travel more comfortable and restful for passengers.
