Bengaluru’s city civic body has mandated the use of Kannada on name boards for all hotels, malls, and other shops in the city. Stringent measures will be taken against establishments that fail to adhere to this rule.
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has mandated that all commercial establishments display signboards with at least 60 per cent of the content in Kannada by the end of February 2024, India Today reported on Sunday.
In a recent meeting chaired by BBMP Commissioner Tushar Girinath, it was decided that licenses of shops, hotels, and malls of those who are discovered, to be breaking the rules may be suspended.
All commercial establishments in Bengaluru must use Kannada prominently on their name boards as much as 60 per cent by February 28, 2024.
The civic body’s Chief Commissioner, Tushar Girinath, stipulated this at a meeting called in Malleswaram by pro-Kannada outfit Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV), which has launched an aggressive campaign to promote the use of Kannada. The use of Kannada is a sensitive issue for a vast section of locals in Karnataka.
As per a BBMP statement, the civic body will survey all the 1,400 km of arterial and sub-arterial roads in the city to identify shops that do not follow the rule. Errant shops will soon be issued notices.
