Pune: A Bengaluru-based onion trader was cheated out of ₹5 lakh after paying for a consignment of onions that was never delivered. The Market Yard police have registered a case against the accused, identified as Dhananjay Khushalchand Bora, based on a complaint filed by Shashikumar T. Vaidyalingam Pillai (46), a resident of Ravindranagar, Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Shashikumar, an onion trader, had contacted Bora to purchase onions in bulk from Pune’s Market Yard. Bora claimed to have a shop in the market and agreed to sell 25 tons of onions for ₹5 lakh. Shashikumar transferred the amount to Bora’s account.

On November 2, Bora informed Shashikumar that the onions had been dispatched via truck to Bengaluru. However, when the consignment failed to arrive, Shashikumar contacted Bora, who claimed that the truck had broken down and requested an additional ₹10,000 to be transferred online to the truck owner. Shashikumar complied but still did not receive the onions.

When further attempts to contact Bora were met with evasive responses, Shashikumar realized he had been defrauded and filed a complaint with the Market Yard police. Inspector Rahulkumar Khilare of the Crime Branch is investigating the case.

This incident comes at a time when there is a shortage of onions in the market, driving up prices for older stock. The demand for Maharashtra’s onions has risen significantly in southern states, including Karnataka.
