Bengaluru Stampede: Case Filed Against RCB, Karnataka Cricket Association, Event Organiser, Probe On
Bengaluru, June 5, 2025 – A suo moto case has been registered by Bengaluru Police against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and DNA Entertainment following a deadly stampede during RCB’s IPL victory celebration on Wednesday that resulted in 11 deaths and left several others injured.
DNA Entertainment was the official event manager for the celebrations, while the KSCA organised the event, as confirmed by the Karnataka government. According to early findings, all three entities allegedly proceeded with the event despite not receiving police permission and ignored crowd control warnings, which contributed to the chaos at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Police Case and Charges
The case has been filed under five sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 105 (culpable homicide). Preliminary investigation revealed:
- Event was held despite lack of official clearance
- No proper crowd entry mechanisms or safety arrangements were made
- RCB social media accounts actively promoted the availability of free passes, intensifying the crowd surge
- Police had warned the organisers, but the advice went unheeded
Police officials stated that despite these lapses, maximum available forces were deployed, which likely prevented an even more serious disaster.
Government Action and Judicial Probe
The Karnataka state cabinet met earlier today to discuss the situation and is considering handing over the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The government will investigate:
- The roles and responsibilities of the KSCA, RCB franchise, and DNA Entertainment
- Actions (or lack thereof) by police officials on duty
- Sequence of events leading to the stampede
District Magistrate G Jagadeesha, appointed by the Karnataka government to lead the probe, confirmed that notices will be sent to the KSCA, Bengaluru Metro, and RCB. He visited Chinnaswamy Stadium today and examined the specific gates where the crowd had surged.
“I started working on it from today itself,” he said, adding that the investigation will include CCTV footage, statements from the families of deceased and injured, and testimonies from the general public.
Public Participation and Police Involvement
- The general public can record their statements on June 13, between 10:30 am and 1:30 pm
- A list of deployed policemen will be prepared, and each will be asked to submit their version of events
The magistrate has 15 days to submit the full report to the state government.
Clarification from State Government
Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara clarified that the state government did not initiate or request the victory celebration.
“We did not make any request to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru franchise or the Karnataka State Cricket Association in this regard. They organised the victory celebration event,” he said. “The government felt that it should felicitate the players and be part of the celebration because it was a Bengaluru team. That’s all.”
The state has now shifted focus to accountability and justice, as both legal and administrative proceedings are set in motion against the event organisers and other responsible entities.
