On forums like Reddit, techies are choosing practical, compact, and easy-to-rent homes over grand, static properties, echoing a philosophy that values utility over luxury.
“I am just unable to figure out whether I should buy a flat or not,” wrote one NRI tech professional who moved to Bengaluru two years ago. After switching companies and shifting homes to stay near work, he hesitated at the idea of getting tied down with a property. “If I change again, I will be stuck,” he said. Many agreed, saying a house shouldn’t become a trap.
The consensus among contributors was clear: think practicality. One Redditor offered a now-viral piece of advice, “Buy an apartment like you’d buy an Android phone, not a Rolex.” The message? Prioritize functionality and flexibility. The same user suggested that if a job change happens, one can simply rent out the apartment and move closer to the new workplace, maintaining both income and convenience.
Others shared similar success stories. A user who bought a 3BHK but later switched jobs found the commute intolerable. Rather than holding out or selling at a loss, they rented it out and moved, earning ₹20,000 more in rental income. “Sometimes you have to make tough decisions for better work-life balance,” they said.
Some took it a step further with strategic investment advice: buy two 2BHKs instead of one 4BHK. Smaller units, they said, are easier to rent or sell.
