Bengaluru Traffic Woes: Midweek Gridlock Peaks on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Know why.
Bengaluru, renowned for its perennial traffic snarls, experiences its most severe congestion midweek, particularly on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
The city’s traffic department attributes this surge in gridlock to the convergence of commuters heading to offices and routine business operations.
M N Anucheth, the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in Bengaluru, disclosed that Wednesdays consistently rank as the peak congestion day. This is primarily due to the high influx of professionals into tech parks, leading to heightened activity on the roads. An analysis conducted by the Bengaluru Traffic Police, focusing on critical areas like the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and Sarjapur Road, based on data from 33 tech parks, reaffirmed this trend.
In response to the worsening traffic scenario, Anucheth suggests that companies encourage their employees to work from the office throughout the week. Presently, there’s a noticeable trend where most professionals opt to work from their workplaces primarily from Tuesdays to Thursdays. This preference is often motivated by the desire to elongate weekends for leisure trips or visits to hometowns.
Moreover, despite the anticipation of reduced congestion around Whitefield following the introduction of the Namma Metro, areas like ORR, Hebbal, and Electronics City, which have a significant tech park presence, continue to lack metro rail connectivity.
The report also underscores the commuters’ inclination towards personal vehicles due to a decrease in air-conditioned buses provided by the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and the absence of dedicated bus lanes, exacerbating the city’s traffic woes.
