Beware !!! Indian students travelling to UK
Scams target aspiring Indian students heading to UK
With a surge in aspirations for global education, an increasing number of students are fervently pursuing opportunities to study abroad.
Among the coveted destinations, the United Kingdom stands out, witnessing a remarkable demand.
However, this fervor has a darker side as a growing cohort of students finds themselves entangled in scams, casting shadows over their dreams of international education.
Many students bound for foreign universities fall prey to various scams. Some of them could even be travel-related ones.
A NatWest study revealed a third of students in UK universities have been targeted by criminals in 2022.
Jaimala Patel, Head of NatWest Student Accounts, said: “It is really important that students remain vigilant and are on their guard when they receive an unexpected text message, email or phone call asking for personal details.”
Both staff and students are popular targets for phishing attacks, especially at the start of the new academic year in September. Universities can also expect a barrage of ransomware attempts beginning during the busy “clearing” period in the UK.
In the meanwhile, The UK Home Office has reported a substantial 54 percent increase in the number of sponsored study visas granted to Indian students compared to 2022.
This development marks a significant shift in favor of the UK as a preferred destination for Indian students seeking higher education.
With the UK government’s recent decision to tighten immigration rules, cases of students falling to unique scams are on the surge, say overseas education consultants.
