New rule cuts penalty on non-FASTag users to promote digital payments

In a major relief for motorists, the central government has revised toll payment rules to make UPI transactions more affordable for those who do not use FASTag. Until now, vehicle owners paying tolls through cash or UPI were required to pay double the toll amount as a penalty for not using FASTag. However, starting November 15, motorists paying via UPI will now have to pay only 25% more than the FASTag rate.

This means if the regular toll through FASTag is Rs 100, motorists paying through UPI will now be charged Rs 125 instead of Rs 200. The new rule is aimed at encouraging digital transactions and easing payment processes at toll plazas.

The FASTag system, made mandatory by the central government, has already helped reduce congestion and speed up transactions at toll booths across the country. However, many vehicle owners still do not use FASTag, leading to penalties and longer queues. The new decision, therefore, offers partial relief to such users while continuing to promote digital payments.

In Maharashtra alone, this change will apply to 96 National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) toll plazas, benefiting thousands of motorists who prefer using UPI.

Officials said the move is part of the government’s larger push to boost cashless and contactless payment systems on highways, aiming for smoother traffic flow and greater transparency in toll collections.

From November 15, if you pay via UPI, you’ll pay only 25% more than the FASTag toll — not double.

Example:

  • FASTag toll: Rs 100
  • UPI payment: Rs 125
  • Cash payment: Rs 200

The revised policy offers much-needed flexibility to drivers and marks a significant step towards integrating UPI into India’s highway tolling system.
