Mumbai, December 18, 2024 — A boat heading to Elephanta Island capsized near the Gateway of India, resulting in one fatality and the rescue of 20 passengers so far. The boat, named ‘Neelkamal,’ was carrying 30 to 35 people when it sank near Uran, Karanja. Rescue operations are ongoing, with the Navy, Coast Guard, and local authorities involved in the operation.

According to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, initial reports suggest that five to seven people are still missing. The Navy has deployed 11 boats, supported by Marine Police and the Coast Guard, and four helicopters have been involved in the search. Local police, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, and nearby fishermen are also aiding in the rescue efforts.

The boat had departed for Elephanta Island around 3:15 PM. Further updates are awaited as the search continues.
