Breaking Barriers In Pune: Pimpri-Chinchwad Hosts Unique Wedding For Transgender Couples
In a first-of-its-kind event, five transgender women marry their male partners, marking a milestone in inclusivity and social acceptance.
Pimpri-Chinchwad witnessed a historic moment on Tuesday as five transgender couples got married in a community wedding conducted under the Hindu Marriage Act. Organized by the NGO ‘Nari The Woman,’ the wedding was held at Balaji Lawns in Kalewadi, with all traditional functions—including the engagement and haldi ceremonies—taking place on the same day.
Many of these couples had been in long-term relationships but faced legal and societal hurdles preventing them from marrying. This ceremony marked a significant step toward recognizing and honoring their love.
‘My Dream Has Come True’
For Shivanya Shinde, the wedding symbolized more than just a union with her partner—it was an affirmation of her identity. “I was born a boy, but I always wanted to live as a woman. Through this wedding, I have gained the right to live my life as I truly am,” she said, overwhelmed with joy.
Rohini Tayade, who had been in a relationship with Dheeraj Sonawane for five years, expressed similar sentiments. “I never imagined such a ceremony could be organized for members of the transgender community. Today, I feel complete,” she said.
Families and Society Embrace Change
For many, societal acceptance remains a challenge. However, some families have been supportive. Santosh Chavan, who runs a paan shop, shared his happiness at his family’s acceptance of his relationship with Madhuri Vairage. “I just hope society embraces us as well,” he added. The couple had been together for a decade before officially tying the knot.
A Milestone for Inclusion
The event was attended by several social activists and politicians, including Chinchwad MLA Shankar Jagtap, who hailed the wedding as a historic milestone. “This ceremony will be remembered as a defining moment for Pimpri-Chinchwad. The city has set a new benchmark for inclusivity and equality,” he said.
This landmark event not only celebrates love but also paves the way for greater recognition and acceptance of transgender rights in India.
