A dramatic rescue unfolded in Thane on Tuesday as a car was almost completely submerged in a flooded underpass, forcing locals to swim through waist-deep water to save the passengers.

The incident occurred near the underpass that connects Narivali and Uttarshiv villages after Upvan Lake overflowed amid incessant rainfall. A short video, now viral on social media, shows two locals swimming up to the stranded vehicle. One of them climbed onto the rear of the car and pushed it down, enabling the passengers trapped inside to climb out through the windows. The two passengers then swam towards the road with the help of rescuers.

Heavy rainfall has battered Thane, Mumbai, Palghar, Navi Mumbai, and Raigad for the second consecutive day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, forecasting extremely heavy showers in Mumbai and adjoining districts.

In view of the weather conditions, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday for all government and private schools as well as colleges in Mumbai on Tuesday. The civic body has also appealed to private organisations to allow employees to work from home and urged citizens to avoid non-essential travel.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as several low-lying areas face waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
