Pune: A scuffle broke out between two groups of rickshaw drivers at the ever-busy Pune Railway Station, reportedly over disputes related to passenger fares. The altercation escalated into a full-blown fight, leaving some drivers with torn clothes and passengers stranded in confusion.
The incident, which occurred early in the morning, involved members of prepaid rickshaw services and metered rickshaw drivers. According to eyewitnesses, an argument between the two groups over picking up passengers quickly turned physical. A video of the fight is currently making rounds on social media, drawing widespread criticism and concern.
Ongoing Disputes
For the past several months, tensions have been brewing between prepaid rickshaw drivers, whose fares are fixed in advance, and metered rickshaw drivers, who charge based on the meter. While there are separate lines for these services outside the railway station, disputes over securing passengers have become a frequent occurrence.
In this particular incident, a disagreement regarding passenger allocation between members of a prepaid booth and metered rickshaw drivers escalated into violence, further exacerbating an already tense situation.
Passengers Bear the Brunt
The chaos caused by the fight led to significant inconvenience for passengers, many of whom were left waiting for transportation amidst the commotion. “It’s frustrating to see this happening repeatedly. We, the commuters, are the ones suffering because of their disputes,” said a passenger who witnessed the incident.
Allegations of Police Negligence
Citizens have accused the police of negligence in managing the situation at the railway station. “Such incidents are becoming too common. The police need to step up and enforce stricter regulations to prevent these fights,” a local resident said.
