Dr Alok Chopra cautions against common habits like vaping, frequent eating, and long-term use of non-stick cookware, while sharing five science-backed ways to preserve heart health.

Maintaining heart health goes beyond a balanced diet and regular exercise, it requires addressing hidden lifestyle risks that may be silently harming the cardiovascular system. In a post shared on August 11, Dr Alok Chopra, functional medicine expert and cardiologist, outlined five key tips to help preserve heart health, while warning against certain popular habits.

Alcohol consumption
Dr Chopra recommends limiting alcohol intake to once or twice a week. “Try to avoid hard liquor; red wine and white wine are better options,” he advised.

Vaping
Contrary to popular belief, vaping is not a safer alternative to smoking. Dr Chopra noted that studies by the National Health Institutes (NIH) show vaping causes similar — and in some cases worse — effects on lung and cardiovascular function compared to traditional cigarettes.

Meal frequency
Dispelling the common fitness trend of eating multiple small meals, Dr Chopra suggested restricting eating to no more than twice daily. “If I eat 100 times a day or three or six times a day, I am storing fat six times a day,” he explained.

Allulose
While allulose is often marketed as a healthier sugar substitute, Dr Chopra cautioned that it is still derived from sugar. He emphasised portion control as the key to its safe use.

Non-stick cookware
He also urged people to avoid long-term use of non-stick pans. Over time, the coating degrades, potentially releasing harmful substances into food, even if the wear is not visible.

Dr Chopra’s advice underscores the importance of re-evaluating everyday habits, from the kitchen to the dining table to safeguard long-term heart health.
