CBSE Issues Notice on Eligibility Rules for Class 10 & 12 Board Exams 2025
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released an important public notice outlining the essential requirements for students appearing in the upcoming Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations.
The notification clarifies attendance norms, subject selection, and eligibility criteria for both regular and private candidates.
According to CBSE, the Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations are part of a two-year programme that includes Class 9–10 and Class 11–12, respectively.
Students must complete two years of study in all subjects to qualify for the final board examinations.
Key Highlights of CBSE Guidelines 2025:
- Mandatory Attendance: Students must maintain at least 75% attendance to be eligible for board exams.
- Internal Assessment: As per NEP 2020, internal assessment is compulsory and conducted over two years. Absence from internal evaluation may result in the student being placed under the ‘Essential Repeat’ category.
- Additional Subjects:
- In Class 10, students can choose two additional subjects along with the five compulsory ones.
- In Class 12, only one additional subject is allowed. These must also be studied over two years.
- Affiliated Schools’ Responsibility: Schools without CBSE approval for certain subjects cannot offer them. Students in such schools are restricted from appearing in those subjects.
- Private Candidates: Students who failed, received a “Compartment,” or were placed in the “Essential Repeat” category earlier may reappear only as private candidates.
- Non-Compliance: Any student failing to meet the above conditions will not be allowed to take exams in additional subjects.
Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj, Controller of Examinations, CBSE, signed the notification and urged schools, students, and parents to carefully follow the updated guidelines.
