CBSE Makes APAAR ID Mandatory for Board Exam Registration: All You Need to Know

CBSE Issues Notice on Eligibility Rules for Class 10 & 12 Board Exams 2025
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that students must now provide their APAAR ID while registering for Class 10 and Class 12 board exams. The decision, approved during the board’s governing body meeting in June, will be implemented for the 2026 board examinations.
What is APAAR ID?
APAAR, short for Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry, is a lifelong identification number introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The unique ID will remain the same throughout a student’s academic journey, from pre-primary to higher education.
Linked to DigiLocker, the APAAR ID will allow report cards, results, and certificates to be stored digitally, making them easily accessible. The government has emphasized that this system will also help curb the issue of fake educational certificates by acting as an authentication tool.
Why is CBSE Linking APAAR ID with Board Exams?
Until now, schools submitted candidate lists for board exams without any standard identity verification. According to CBSE, this led to inconsistencies and difficulty in tracking students’ records. By linking board exam registration with APAAR ID, the board aims to improve data accuracy, transparency, and eliminate duplication.
The Ministry of Education has also directed schools nationwide to adopt APAAR IDs as part of the Digital Public Infrastructure for Education, creating a universal academic record system for every student.
How Can Students Get an APAAR ID?
To generate an APAAR ID, students (or their parents) must submit details such as name, age, date of birth, gender, Aadhaar number, and photograph. The information will be verified using Aadhaar authentication. Many schools have already distributed consent forms and conducted awareness meetings with parents.
Privacy Concerns
While parents have expressed concerns about data privacy and misuse of personal information, the government has clarified that student data will only be shared with authorised bodies like UDISE+, scholarship portals, academic institutions, and recruitment agencies.
With CBSE making APAAR ID compulsory, the system is expected to streamline exam registration, ensure authenticity of academic records, and support digital education reforms.
