CBSE to Launch First-Ever Community Radio Station for Students and Teachers Across India

CBSE Issues Notice on Eligibility Rules for Class 10 & 12 Board Exams 2025
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to establish its own community radio station to enhance educational outreach and directly connect with students, teachers, and schools nationwide. The proposal received approval during the CBSE Governing Body’s recent meeting.
The board plans to apply for a community radio licence in the coming months. Over the next six months, CBSE will conduct consultations with stakeholders and technical experts to finalise the application, content framework, and financial planning.
Expanding Communication Channels
A senior CBSE official stated, “Once the licence is procured, we will work out the modalities for the content that will be broadcast.” The programming is expected to focus on academic guidance, educational updates, and interactive sessions tailored to CBSE’s vast and diverse community.
From Shiksha Vani to Live Radio
CBSE already runs Shiksha Vani, a podcast platform offering NCERT-aligned audio lessons for Classes 9 to 12, with nearly 400 episodes available on the Google Play Store. Unlike the podcast, the upcoming community radio will be a live, interactive medium, enabling real-time engagement and dissemination of information.
Role of Community Radio in Education
Community radio is India’s third tier of broadcasting, alongside public and commercial radio. With 540 licensed stations nationwide — mostly run by educational institutions, NGOs, and non-profits — it is recognised for its ability to engage local communities through content in regional languages and dialects.
This initiative could be particularly impactful in areas with limited internet access, providing students and teachers with a reliable channel for academic support, awareness campaigns, and updates.
If all processes proceed as planned, CBSE’s community radio could be on air in the near future — making it the first national education board in India to launch such a platform.
