Chaos on Sinhagad Road Flyover: Drivers Reverse in Gridlock, Sparking Safety Concerns

Pune’s newly inaugurated Sinhagad Road flyover witnessed scenes of chaos late Monday night as frustrated drivers began reversing their vehicles amid a severe traffic jam—raising serious concerns about road safety and traffic management.

The congestion, which reportedly started at the Fun Time Theater junction and extended to Veer Baji Pasalkar Chowk in Vadgaon, brought traffic to a standstill. In response, several motorists took illegal U-turns and drove in reverse toward Rajaram Bridge, creating further bottlenecks near Vitthalwadi Kaman and endangering oncoming traffic.

“There wasn’t a single traffic officer around. It was complete chaos. It’s a miracle no major accident happened,” said a commuter stuck near Santosh Hall.

The two-kilometer flyover, connecting Vitthalwadi Kaman to Vadgaon, was opened by the Pune Municipal Corporation on May 1. Since then, it has seen a surge in traffic—but without upgrades to key junctions, especially at the entry and exit points, regular snarls have become the norm.

Though senior officials, including Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil, have visited the site, residents say no concrete action has been taken. Locals are calling for immediate steps, including proper signage, lane markings, and consistent police presence.

“With the city growing so fast, we need more than just new roads—we need smart traffic planning and strict enforcement,” said a nearby resident.

The incident underscores a growing urban challenge: building infrastructure is not enough without comprehensive traffic oversight and long-term planning.
