Citizens Demand Action as Banned Dog Breeds Roam Pune Streets
Pune residents are increasingly concerned about the presence of banned dog breeds in the city, following a rise in attacks. The Jagruk Punekar Samiti, a local citizens’ group, has urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the police to take immediate action against pet owners violating government regulations.
The demand comes after a shocking incident on Prabhat Road, where a Dogo Argentino a breed banned by the Central Government attacked a pet owner and his Beagle, leaving both injured. Despite complaints to the authorities, no action was reportedly taken.
Call for Strict Enforcement
Dilip Singh Vishwakarma, representing the Jagruk Punekar Samiti, pointed out that several pet owners in Pune’s elite neighborhoods continue to ignore the nationwide ban on 23 dangerous dog breeds, including Pit Bulls, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and Dogo Argentinos. These breeds were banned due to their involvement in fatal attacks.
Residents are now calling for stricter enforcement of regulations, fearing for public safety. The Jagruk Punekar Samiti has put forward key demands to PMC and the police:
- Inspections: Conduct searches in residential areas to identify illegal pet ownership.
- Licensing Enforcement: Penalize owners without the required pet licenses.
- Vaccination Checks: Ensure all dogs are vaccinated to prevent disease outbreaks.
- Action Against Breeders: Crack down on pet shops and breeders violating the ban.
Authorities Yet to Respond
Despite mounting concerns, neither PMC nor the police have responded to the citizens’ demands. The lack of enforcement has left many questioning the commitment of authorities to public safety. Residents are urging swift action before another incident occurs.
